Leeks Close Up

Make sure it’s fresh ... well, according to the needs of the moment

In this image, I photographed leeks, not for a cookbook or in an advertising style, but just to make art.

I tested different viewpoints and lighting methods. I used a simple but cool post-processing method. I also tried different ways of presenting the work.

The fresh and interesting food I had on hand was leeks. I had several, in fact, so I had to choose the right leeks.

The process: Of course, I was thinking about texture, shape and colour, but also framing, guidelines, background and coloured surface.

Framing and composition: I first tried a top-down view, but the long, curved shape of the subject was, well, all over the place. A side view, on the other hand, is much better. And to make it unusual, why not photograph the roots? Then use the other two to frame the photo.

Lighting: Raw light. One flash high up, aimed at the table. Another flash aimed at the ceiling to control the intensity of the shadows.

Post-production: to keep it simple, it's a secret!
